what is the best computer software for making hip hop style beats and where can I buy it?

It depends on "where you are" in your production career. What would be "the best" simply would not be appropriate for a beginner. From your question, I assume that you are getting started making beats on a computer.

The previous advice to use FL Studio is a good tip. You can go to flstudio.com and download a demo or even purchase a dowloadable licensed version… or a boxed version. It’s really simple to punch out drum tracks using the step-sequencer, and you can play the software synths using the computer keyboard, which means that you can get started super-cheap. It’s really, really easy to make a pretty cool beat on FL in minutes. The sound quality is off the hook. Many of the recent southern and pop-rap hits come straight off FL. Also, all the internet rappers are running straight FL.

I’d say the biggest negative to FL Studio is that it has a rather predictable sound. I mean, most producers and experienced MC’s with good ears can hear a FL beat a mile away. It’s kinda a mark of inexperience when experienced folks hear a FL beat. Of course, if you really learn how to freak it, add creative samples, and use various quantization (timing) you can make beats without that trademark FL feel.

I recommend trying the demo and then buying a basic package if you like it. From there, you can build up your studio. This is a great way to get started!

**Keep in mind that FL Studio is really only useful for arranging beats. For vocal recording, you’ll want to use a stand-alone recording program.

Protools and reason are great. Go to guitar center. Reason is like 5 beans though. That’s what I use.

Like the others said, FL Studio is great.

Here’s a 10% discount on it if you decide to buy it. It helps out a bit.

Make sure you check out the Producer Edition at least. If you want the real bang for your buck, XXL bundle is the way to go. You basically get a few instruments at a big discount in that xxl package.

    have fun
