How did producers back in the 90s without computers make hip hop beats?

I know they used to make ‘em with turntables but what else did they use. Also maybe early 2000s when Kanye was making beats when he was poor. Howd he do it?

    ummm… they had computers in the 90’s dude. Sometimes they were called synthesizers. Also there are these things called instruments. They make sounds.
